AGRICULTURE INSURANCE WEBINAR

TOBACCO INSURANCE IN ZIMBABWE

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Agricultural Insurance Webinar on Tobacco Insurance in Zimbabwe is designed as a progressive learning journey that begins with the fundamentals of agricultural risk and insurance while highlighting the economic significance of tobacco production in Zimbabwe and the predominance of smallholder and contract farming systems.

Participants will explore the diverse risks affecting the sector, including climatic hazards, post-harvest losses, operational challenges, and financial vulnerabilities. The webinar will then examine available insurance solutions, covering both traditional indemnity-based products such as Tobacco Hail and Wind Insurance and innovative index-based insurance products.

The course will further address key industry issues, including underwriting and pricing challenges, ESG-related reinsurance constraints, claims management, and payout mechanisms. In addition, participants will gain insights into barriers limiting insurance uptake, such as affordability concerns and low financial literacy, and explore practical strategies to improve penetration through contract farming arrangements and extension services.

The webinar concludes with a forward-looking perspective on the role of government policy, Climate-Smart Agriculture, and sustainable farming practices in strengthening the resilience of Zimbabwe’s tobacco value chain.
