FOUNDATIONS OF AGRICULTURE INSURANCE WEBINAR

COURSE OVERVIEW

Agriculture is the backbone of many economies, yet it operates in an environment defined by uncertainty — ranging from climate variability and natural disasters to pests, diseases, and market fluctuations. These risks not only threaten farmer livelihoods but also have far-reaching implications for food security, financial stability, and economic growth. Agricultural insurance has emerged as a critical tool for managing these uncertainties, enabling farmers, insurers, and governments to share risk, enhance resilience, and promote sustainable agricultural development. However, the effectiveness of agricultural insurance depends on a clear understanding of its principles, structures, and practical application.

This training on the Foundations of Agricultural Insurance is designed to build that essential understanding. It offers participants a structured introduction to the agricultural risk landscape, the design and delivery of insurance solutions, and the operational mechanisms that support them. By unpacking key concepts, product types, and implementation frameworks, the course equips participants with the knowledge needed to engage meaningfully in the development and expansion of agricultural insurance. In doing so, it supports stronger, more inclusive insurance markets that can better serve farmers — particularly smallholders — and contribute to long-term resilience.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

i.) Explain the role and importance of agricultural insurance in managing risks, stabilizing farmer incomes, and supporting food security.

ii.) Identify key agricultural risks and apply core insurance principles within agricultural contexts.

iii.) Differentiate between major types of agricultural insurance products and understand their applications across crop, livestock, aquaculture, forestry, and parametric solutions.

iv.) Describe the operational framework, challenges, and emerging trends in agricultural insurance, including premiums, subsidies, claims processes, technology, and smallholder inclusion.
